Phong Nha

Hang Sơn Đoòng - Son Doong Cave in Vietnamese, is the largest natural cave in the world, located in Phong Nha, Central Vietnam.

Son Doong Cave is more than 8 kilometers long and up to 200 meters tall, from bottom to top. In the year 1991, the cave was accidentally discovered by Ho Khanh - a local Vietnamese farmer who was looking for agarwood.

When Khanh first saw the cave he was amazed by the sound of rushing water and from the wind blowing out of the entrance to the cave. When he came back to look for the cave entrance, he couldn't find it.

He decided that he had to tell it to professionals and found two members of The British Cave Research Association. On 10-14th of April 2009, the first expedition led by Khanh into the cave had performed a survey to measure the cave.

Deep into Hang Sơn Đoòng, the expedition stopped, due to a high flowstone-coated wall, over 60 meters high. The crew named this wall - “The Great Wall Of Vietnam”. After a year the expedition came back to the cave, traversed the wall and reached the end of the cave’s path.

The ecosystem in the cave is independent and has its own climate and beautiful nature with jungle, rivers, fog and clouds. When you go deep into the caves you can experience total darkness, it is one of very few places in the world.

The name Son Doong comes from “Sơn” - the Vietnamese word for mountain and “đoòng” which means cave - Son Doong is Mountain cave.

In August 2013 was the first time tourists were allowed in. The group explored the cave at a cost of $3,000 per person. Since then, tours are conducted on a regular basis between January to August, due to rainy season weather.
Trekking in Hang Sơn Đoòng is very popular for nature adventure lovers. Visitors are allowed to explore in the cave with professional guides only, because of safety reasons.

Nowadays tours are conducted in the format of a 6-day adventurous trek.
Every tour includes 10 researchers, one cave safety expert, 2 chefs, professional tour guide, 17 porters carrying luggage, 6 Safety assistants, food, camping equipment and one guard to escort the group.

The camping areas are located inside the great dome of the cave, but have enough light that reaches the cave from the outside. If you get lucky, on some sunny days, you can see the  sunshine’s rays reach the cave entrances and present the glorified landscape of Hang Sơn Đoòng.
